Land North of Whalley Road, Read

Applethwaite will shortly submit a full planning application for a landscape‑first scheme that includes:

• Around 77 new homes to meet local needs.
• A large new public area for recreation, opened to the community for the first time.
• Walking routes, seating areas and wildlife habitats integrated into the design.

Only a small part of the available land will be developed.  The majority will be laid out and secured as publicly accessible open space, with clear and lasting limits on development so that its open, green character is maintained.

The design places green space, ecology, and public access at the heart of the layout, with homes arranged to respect existing landscape features.

Safe, attractive routes are provided through the site.

The intention is to complete the edge of Read in a thoughtful way while opening up attractive space for everyday enjoyment.

Like many settlements, Read has evolved over time.  Supporting a healthy mix of households helps to maintain:

• Schools
• Local shops
• Community facilities and services

This scheme helps support and rebalance the demographic, support services and sustain the village for future generations. 

The proposed open space will be carefully managed to protect its landscape and ecological value for the long term.
